Description
A view of the Doric temple of Aphaia on Aegina island in the Saronic Gulf, south of Athens, showing some of the modern repairs. Aphaia appears to have been derived from a Minoan nymph, Britomartis, and was later associated with Athina. This temple was built in about 500BC to replace a structure that had burned down a few years earlier. It pre-dates the Parthenon in Athens, which is thought to have been influenced by its style.
