Description
Ruins of the Roman era Villa with the Peristyle Yard at Aptera, on Crete, Greece. This was home for some wealthy people from the 1st to the 4th century AD, when it was destroyed along with the rest of Aptera by a great earthquake as the sun rose on July 21st 365. The quake was one of the strongest in human history and devastated areas around the Med. The west end of the island was propelled upwards by as much as 33 feet and virtually all the towns on the huge island were destroyed. The quake has been calculated at a magnitude of 8.5
