Description
Qatari children play on the "Orry" statue, of Qatar's national mascot, on the Corniche in Doha, while their mothers snap their photos on mobile phones.
Orry, a sporting caricature of the country's national animal, the Oryx, was invented as a symbol for the Asian Games which were held here in 2006 and carries the Asian Games Torch from that year.
Now Orry is used to advertise all sorts of sporting events. When this shot was taken, on April 3, 2013, the freshly-repainted mascot's clock was counting down to National Sports Day.
Qatar, a conservative Muslim country in which anything that involves drinking or gambling is frowned on, invests heavily in sports locally and internationally, as a vehicle to engage the interests of its young people and promote their personal development. It has succeeded in securing the football World Cup, would like to have the olympics and routinely hosts a wide range of international events, from watersports and equestrian to motorbike racing and athletics.
This is a large-format black and white film photograph.
