Description
Greek War of Independence heroine "Kapetanissa" Laskarina Bouboulina depicted gazing to sea in a statue on her home island of Spetses. Bouboulina inherited a fortune from her husband, expanded his trading fleet and eventually spent most of her fortune on ships, arms and supplies for the Greek independence fighters against the Ottoman empire, commanding her own ships in the struggle. She was killed in a family feud in 1825 and posthumously made an Admiral of the Russian Navy. She was the first and for almost 190 years the only woman to achieve that rank.
