The view of Intzedin Fort, Crete, a former Greek political prison and execution site, and Souda Bay harbour to Akrtiri peninsula. It was built in the last decades of Ottoman rule on the island but gained its notoriety after Cretan independence, In the early years, emerging Cretan statesman Venizelos was imprisoned there for a fortnight and in 1926 deposed dictator Theodoros Pangalos was incarcerated in it for two years. After WWII the prison housed captured Communists, some of whom were executed there. Today the fort is abandoned and in disrepair.
