Description
An incomplete Roman olive press or trapetum in the ruins of the Houses with the peristyle yard, at Aptera, Crete, The bowl would have had two hemispherical stones in it, connected by a rod that swiveled over the central hole. The olives would be poured in and crushed by the rotating stones, the oil escaping through the hole in the bottom. Presumably this was being stored in a corner awaiting the olive season when the disaster of the AD365 earthquake struck
