Description
The sun dips below threatening clouds at sunset in Sougia, a small and fairly inaccessible town on the south coast of Crete, Greece.
Cut off from neighbouring areas by the soaring mountains of Sfakia, Sougia's primary connections with the rest of the world are a limited bus service to the City of Chania, an hour or more away on the north coast, and the South Coast ferry, which plies between Palaeochora to the West and Agia Roumeli to the East. This makes the village a valued destination for those who value solitude and simplicity, with the village providing some limited accommodation and a number of tavernas serving food that is rather more traditional than in the tourist traps of the island's north coast.
The bay was almost certainly of greater significance in the Roman era, and the ruins of the ancient city of Syia still crumble on the plateau just behind the beach, just next to the modern town, where they are now inhabited by goats and the occasional rough-camper. In ancient times, the city would undoubtedly have housed any overflow of pilgrims from the neighbouring valley, where an important temple to the healing god Aesclepius supported a thriving tourist industry, much as Lourdes does today.
