Description
The recently restored superyacht Blue Bird, originally built for land-speed record breaker Sir Malcolm Campbell in 1938, moored off southern Crete, Greece, in 2008.
The ocean-going vessel was built for a planned treasure hunting trip in the Pacific but was commandeered for duty as a customs vessel during World War II and never made the trip. She was bombed in the war and survived only because the bomb failed to explode.
After Sir Malcolm's death in 1948 she passed through several hands before being restored to her original style by her new English owner a year before this photo was taken.
