Artist's Description

The Venetian-era Frangokastello fortress in Sfakia, on the south coast of Crete, Greece. The castle was constructed in 1371-74 to impose order on the hinterland and deter pirates. It was the scene of a bloody defeat of Greeks by Ottoman forces during the Greek War of Independence in May 1828 when it was reportedly destroyed, before being rebuilt 40 years later by the Ottomans in response to another uprising.
