Approaching the bottom of the 13km long Samaria Gorge (named for St Maria) on Crete, Greece, one of the longest gorges in Europe and a popular - but strenuous - walk for visiting tourists. It is a world biosphere reserve and a national park. This photograph was taken in 1996
