Artist's Description
The restored Vulcan nuclear bomber XH558 in action at Lowestoft Air Show in 2008. The aircraft which was once part of Britain's nuclear defence force, will be retired at the end of the 2013 show season, as the costs of maintenance are becoming prohibitive, with necessary modifications to extend its flying life estimated to cost 200,000 ($300,000).
The only action this plane saw was during the Falklands War, when it flew 8,000 miles to bomb Port Stanley airport, which was being used by the Argentine air force.
XH558 is the last remaining airworthy Vulcan, and was restored by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust in 2007.
Vulcans were operated by the Royal Air Force from 1956 to 1984, and were the mainstay of Britain's airborne nuclear deterrent.
